Accompany a Learner

In common with other good driving schools we at EXCEED know that learning to drive is not as easy as it is perceived to be by many members of the public.

For many novice drivers it takes MUCH longer to get to the required standard than most people appreciate. It is most certainly not like it was 20 or even just 10 years ago.

It's a sobering thought that about 10 people a day are killed on Britain's roads as a result of car crash. But as far as novice drivers go it has been shown that the more miles that are driven, the more experience a novice driver has, and so the risks fall. In other words there is NO substitute for "road miles".... practice, practice and more practice.

And that is where you, the accompanying driver comes in to the equation. This fact in itself may be a daunting prospect for you!

Learning to drive with a professional instructor is normally the "right way" to go but additional practice with friends/family can be invaluable in order to practice what the instructor/novice have been doing in the structured lessons.

However, this is pointless if the "private practice" is not being monitored and assessed correctly. In fact, it is very easy for private practice to actually have a negative effect on the students progress if the novice is allowed to drive without proper supervision or if those all too common "bad habits" are transferred from the accompanying driver to the novice!

Help is at hand.

EXCEED has the solution to help you, the accompanying driver to achieve that magic 'test pass' for your family member/friend hopefully in a shorter time frame and at a high standard.

It is important to point out at this point that we all recognise that the 'test' is only the beginning, and what comes after, solo driving, is the main target of the teaching/coaching by both the instructor and the accompanying driver.

So, we have designed a very short course (typically 2 hours or so) to assess and improve, if necessary, YOUR driving so that YOU can control, assess, coach and help to improve your family member/friend sound in the knowledge that you yourself are doing it right.

We don't expect you to be a 'driving instructor', just to be confident that your driving is good enough to be used as a template for the novice.

We will also provide you with the DSAs' Official Guide to Accompanying Learner Drivers, a basic but sensible and easy to understand companion. We provide a 'private practice' record sheet so that practice can be carefully monitored and checked by all parties.

This may be a big jump, no one likes having their driving assessed. But there is a bigger picture here - the success, and more importantly, the SAFETY of your family member/friend. We STRONGLY recommend that ALL accompanying drivers take this assessment.
